The term After Image can be interpreted in many ways.
It could be that what is between past and present, reality and fiction.
An After Image can be the recreation of a moment, place or person in ones head, but it could also be a reconstruction of things we have seen and experienced.

Things we see and experience gain meaning through the cultural context we live in. But this cultural context is not static. Especially not in Holland where people with all kinds of different cultural backgrounds live and mingle.
The way we see and interpret things are influenced by our cultural background, the way we are raised, places we grew up, people we have met, places we travelled to.

Alsonderdeel van de tentoonstelling NIJVER|heden presenteren studenten vanhet Sandberg Instituut teAmsterdam hun werk in het buitenmuseum. De jonge ontwerpers geveninterpretaties op de evolutie van ambachten met als focus nijverheid enindustrieën rondom de Zuiderzee.

De uit Kroatiëafkomstige Mirela Srsa raakte in het Zuiderzeemuseum onder de indruk van hetgetoonde dagelijkse leven rond 1900. Maar waar waren de bewoners gebleven?Mirela miste de mens achter het voorwerp. Ze miste hun sporen van bestaan enzag nergens emotie, gevoelens, liefde, passie en rouw.

Op basis vanoude foto’s en gebruikmakend van de tijdrovende oude techniek borduren,vervaardigde Srsa op een bijna meditatieve manier een nieuwe wandbespanningvoor dit woonhuis. Hierop keert de werkende mens met al zijn emoties terug naarhuis.

The exhibition Industrious artefacts contains presentations in the Indoor Museum and the Outdoor Museum and shows the evolution of crafts before and after the closing of the Zuiderzee (1932) in relation to current developments in international and Dutch design and small-scale production ( industries).

The Applied Arts department of the Sandberg Institute presents projects in 5 houses in the Outdoor museum.

Galerie Marzee was founded in 1978 as a gallery for contemporary jewellery, and has since become one of the principal promoters of contemporary jewellery and silverware. Since 1995 the gallery is housed in a former granary on Nijmegen’s waterfront, midway between the two bridges that cross the river here. With 850 square meters of exhibition space, Galerie Marzee is one of the largest galleries in the Netherlands, and the largest gallery for modern jewellery in the world.

Gallery Marzee establish the Marzee Graduate Prize for the best new artist. Award is one week in Rawary workshop in Belgium. Results of the workshop are presented in the gallery.

The theme is the concept
Contemporary visual art in the design, the copy has become the expression of cultural identity and memory of the universal context. Like the word placed into the same sentence with different content can be presented as ambiguity, at different levels, the copy of meaning not only in the extension and expansion, and because of ambiguity exists in a variety of similarities and differences, revealing This concept contains some contradictions and conflicts. Contradictions and conflicts - in a nutshell - one from the cultural differences, on the other hand from the practice of different purposes.
Contemporary concepts of replication involves the following manner or behavior: learning, memory, imitation, production, exchange, transmission, copying and creativity ... ... and so on. All of these methods and acts with a country's traditions and current living situation has been deeply linked.
Contemporary visual culture as a phenomenon of the most common copy - from technology-driven electronic media development - not only means to improve and enhance the dissemination of visual information functions, but also - from product production technology - modern major environmental human life. However, in the copy presented the concept of the geographical and cultural characteristics of natural and not because of the role of these two points away.
Related to contemporary visual design of the creative concept, copy, apparently no longer a simple sense, learning, reproduction, imitation, and the concept of inheritance. The form of the existing re-interpretation replaced the original form-oriented. The so-called interpretation, that is inherent in the Deconstruction and Reconstruction of the things the relationship between cultural patterns and the inherent form of a new link established.

Therefore, when people realized that an educational mode to change the time, it actually means to change a country for centuries or even thousands of years of knowledge accumulated value of the approved standards. From this point on that in the field of contemporary visual arts education, the copy clearly and relating to the cultural identity on some of the issues worth exploring.

The Theme of the Exhibition: The Power of Copying
A brief introduction to the theme
Mass-production makes the action of copying become the main drive for our modern lifestyle. Rapid development of "the media" also helps copying to be turned into an all-pervading phenomenon in this era of image-reading.

In the fields of visual culture and visual art, the word copy refers to different notions. It is quite similar to putting the same word into different contexts which makes the word a polysemic. The meanings of the word copy not only has been extended in different layers, there are some similarities and differences, in these instances the word copy shows the contradictions and conflicts that the act of copying involves. In brief, on the one hand they show the cultural diversity, and on the other hand they show the purpose of difference.
The contemporary concept of copying refers to the following different significations: a way of learning, remembering, imitating, producing, displacing the context, following suit, plagiarizing and creating art works. All these could affect a country's tradition and current living condition at its deepest level.
Background Information for the Theme
Background I
According to the technology development of electronic-oriented media and product, copying not only implies the improvement on functionalities and efficiency of transmitting visual information, but also constructs the way of living in modern society. However, these factors can't demolish the regional and cultural diversities.

Referring to the ideas of contemporary graphic design, copying absolutely is not like simply imitating. The fact is all the forms are re-comprehended and replaced by "creativity". It is focused on searching for new contexts, de-construct the previous form and reconstruct it in a new format. This situation changes such preconceived ideas about copying as learning, memorizing, displacing context, imitating, plagiarizing and creating art works, and the understanding on the perspectives and actions of designing is substantially changed.

This exhibition will pay attention to the impact that the concept of copying brings to contemporary visual culture and visual art and design, focusing on the cultural clash and difference hiding in it.

Background II
The participants of the exhibition are mainly from art academies. Therefore, this exhibition also involves the education and teaching contemporary visual art and design.

Is copying a way of learning or imitating, or a way of re-comprehending and creating? In the education fields in different countries, the teaching idea and method are quite different. The teaching mode is formed by the long-prevailing traditional thinking pattern in a specific country. For that reason, when people start to think of changing an education mode, actually means to change the valuation and judgment standard which are deep-rooted in this culture. In this sense, copying, as one of the important elements in visual tradition is an "ancient" topic, but the perspective has changed a lot on how discard the dross and select the essence in the education area of contemporary visual art. The curator of the exhibition wants to show the situation that contemporary visual art confronting the education by exhibiting a large amount of design works in order to create an interesting dialogue between the two.

Dutch Design Week and is a major international annual 9-day event in Eindhoven (formerly 'Design Week'), Where design is central in many aspects. This event is part of the efforts of Eindhoven to profile themselves as design and technology area and the design environment to build on and strengthen. Dutch Design Week in which 2002 have started with 20 participants, that there are 280 events in 2009.

The main components are the annual "Graduation Show" with the graduation of

Design Academy Eindhoven and the exhibition and awards of the Dutch Design Awards .

The event takes place annually in October. At dozens of locations throughout the city are exhibitions, lectures, exhibits, etc. to admire. Program locations are

White Lady , The Clock Building at the site of Strijp-S , The TU / e , The Design House , TAC (Temporary Art Center) and numerous smaller sites in the city.

SI Module is the portable platform for Applied Arts and Autonomous Design, initiated by Sandberg Institute Applied Arts department.On a special table a system of modules will be build. The sizes of these modules are variable, depending on the size of works exhibited.

Tijdens deze expostie toont Luis Acosta zijn objecten "voorbij textiel en papier" die veelal een geometrische grondslag hebben.

Helmie van de Riet laat zich voor haar werk inspireren door de anatomie van de mens. In haar sculpturenlaat zij de eigenzinnige wereld van Helmie van de Riet zien. Haar werk veroorzaakt regelmatig een glimlach op het gezicht van de toeschouwer. De wereld hoeft niet zo serieus genomen te worden, aldus Helmie.

Mirela Srsa is net afgestudeerd aan de Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. Haar sieraden zijn gemaakt van textiel waarbij zij zich laat inspireren door haar achtergrond. Folklorische elementen zijn in haar sieraden terug te vinden. Daarbij zijn haar sieraden gevuld met bonen, rijst e.d.. Mirela heeft al zeer vroeg geleerd dat het hebben van eten een van de belangrijkste dingen in het leven van een mens is.

Gra prijzen

De GRA prijzen 2009 zijn groter dan ooit!
2 prijzen van 1500 euro elk worden uitgereikt aan de twee grootste talenten van de Rietveld Academie. Dit wordt bepaald door onze speciale jury van kenners en kunstenaars uit het werkveld.
Op 4 juli reikte Ben Zegers, Directeur Onderwijs lid van het College van Bestuur van de Gerrit Rietveld Academie, de prijzen uit in de kantine van de academie. Dit gebeurde om 16.00 uur.
Twee studenten kregen een prijs.Een in de categorie Autonome Beeldende Kunst, afkomstig uit een van de volgende afdelingen: VAV, Beeldende Kunst, Fotografie, Keramiek, Beeld en Taal, Theatervormgeving, Dogtime’s beeldende Kunst (deeltijdopleiding).De ander in de categorie Toegepaste Kunst, afkomstig uit een van de volgende afdelingen: Mode, Textiel, Designlab, Architectonisch Ontwerpen, Grafisch Ontwerp, Edelsmeden, Dogtime’s ID-UM.

GRA Awards

This year’s GRA AWARDS are bigger than big!2 prices of 1500 euros each will be awarded to those two talents that convince our members of the jury the most!On the 4th of July at 4 pm Ben Zegers, member of the board of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie made public who has won this years GRA Awards in the canteen of the Rietveld Academie.
Two students were awarded.One in the category Fine Arts , represented by ALL fine arts departments: VAV, Photography, Ceramics, Fine Arts, Image and Language, Theatre, DOGtime’s Fine Arts.and one in the category Design, represented by ALL design departments: Fashion, TXT (Textile), designLAB, Architectural Design, Graphic design, Precious Matter (Jewellery) , DOGtime’s ID-UM.

Het juryrapport:

Our members of the jury were very much impressed with these works of Mirela Srsa. Mirela has used elements from her past in her oversized jewellery. Her work is very subtle and abstract at the same time. It could be mentioned to be folkloristic but that would be too simple. It’s wearable and it shows the great love that’s been put in to it. The collection as a whole is beautiful. The person of Mirela can be found in her jewellery and our judges were very pleased to grant Mirela a nomination.
